NoStimulus.com is a grassroots website that we hope will be a focal point for the widespread frustration ordinary Americans feel at the runaway government growth that we see during good economic times and bad. During the boom years, we saw dramatic increases in federal, state, and local spending as the coffers were flooded by tax dollars from both real economic growth and the inflating of bubbles in the dot-com and housing markets. During the bust years, we are told that the solution is more government spending. We’re skeptical.
We know that government can’t create money out of thin air. It has to either tax it out of the private economy, or borrow it. Borrowed money has to be paid back. Now, borrowing might make sense if it were for real investments that would increase economic productivity, create wealth, and allow us to pay back the debt with more left over. That’s not the kind of borrowing the federal government is looking at.
We’re told that spending on anything and everything is investment, but it looks more like good old-fashioned government spending. Thousands and thousands of special-interest projects all over the country are likely to be funded. (For a long list of projects mayors are eager to spend federal dollars on click here.) The money will be spent and then gone. But we’ll still be saddled with paying back the debt.
Borrowing too much to pay for consumption is a problem many Americans know all too well. That’s why we’re seeing a lot of families doing their best to pay down debt and build up savings. The federal government needs to do the same thing, not take on even more debt for a bonanza of new spending.
This site is a project of Americans for Prosperity. We hope it will grow well beyond our initial efforts and become a focal point for all of the groups and individuals that want to fight back.
